Orthognathic Surgery (Jaw Surgery)
If you feel that you may have a facial in-balance such as an over-prominent or an under-projected jaw, a long or a short face or even a flat mid-face and cheek region with or without a malocclusion ("bad bite") a thorough evaluation by your surgeon in conjunction with your dentist and orthodontist may help you in analyzing the source of your concern. A surgical repositioning of the upper and/or lower jaws and chin may help you obtain a proper anatomic and functional relationship of the facial structures in order to achieve a more harmonious, esthetic facial balance and a better occlusion ("bite"). A preoperative period of orthodontics ("braces") may be necessary in certain situations. This highly gratifying procedure is usually performed on an inpatient basis under general anesthetic.
