Liposuction is a procedure to remove localized fat deposits in the neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, thighs or knees. It is not a method of weight loss but rather to recontour or sculpt the body. Small incisions are used to inject saline (salt water) and a mixture of local anesthetic and adrenalin. This is called tumescent liposuction. This result in very little bleeding or bruising during the surgery and allows the fat to be removed more evenly and safely. Fat is gently removed using suction equipment to minimize trauma to the skin and muscles. Most people will not notice any change in weight as fat is not very heavy. They do notice a visible difference in their shape and the way clothing fits. It may take 2 to 3 months to see the final result. As long as a person's diet and exercise level remains stable, fat should not return to the areas that it was removed from.
